The RVIS Early Childhood program is an inquiry based differentiated program that fosters independence and explorative learning. Teachers use developmentally appropriate practices that allow students to explore a variety of ideas and concepts through relevant first-hand experiences and manipulatives. The program adopts a holistic approach involving the teacher, school, child and parent where children are cared for in a safe, warm environment that fosters their cognitive, physical, language, and social-emotional development. Positive reinforcement, having fun and acquiring social competence ensure that well adjusted, successful learners evolve from Early Childhood to Elementary.
Daily Routines reinforce Mathematics and Literacy concepts through morning meetings, calendar skills, daily schedule, environmental print, music and singing.
Opportunities to Explore
The Music program is one or two times a week depending on the age of the student. The overall goal is to provide lots of opportunities to explore music in different ways. Kids sing songs, play games and explore instruments to experience many different musical concepts. Units of study include Vocal Exploration, Instrumental Exploration, Musical Opposites (Fast/slow, loud/quiet, high/low), and Steady Beats. The Pre K and KG classes also end the year with a performance showcasing some of the songs they've learned throughout the year. By the end of EC music, students have a strong foundation of musical skills gained from a wide variety of experiences. They should be able to keep a steady beat and know how to use their voices for singing.
The goal of the Physical Education Department is to promote a healthy lifestyle helping students develop appropriate skills for their age level.
Through units of study such as Team Building, Chasing Games, Soccer, Throwing/Catching, Hitting/Striking, Basketball, and Swimming, students develop important skills while learning good sportsmanship and teamwork.
Through a growth mindset approach, the elementary Art program explores what it means to be an artist and to create a work of art. The elements of art that are studied throughout the program include, line, form space, color, shape, value texture, drawing, painting, ceramics, weaving/textiles and sculpture. Students also focus on evaluating, reflecting, and assessing their artwork through the creation of portfolios.
