Intercollegiate Debate @RUW By Ysabella Melo Admissions Coordinator Published: 2024-05-14 06:49:17 Our high school students had the opportunity to attend an intercollegiate debate this week. Organized by Dr. Reem Abu-Lughod from RUW, the debate has left a lasting impact on high school students.Teams from RCSI, UOB, RUW, and Arab Open University took part in the debate, addressing topics such as the potential impact of AI on the workforce and the lingering issue of the glass ceiling for women in the workplace. This debate helped provide our students with a valuable opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the art of debate. They got to witness firsthand how the various teams engaged in thoughtful, compelling, and respectful discussions; helping them learn debate techniques, broaden their perspectives, and inspire them to stand up for their beliefs with compassion and understanding. Our students were also offered the opportunity to participate through asking questions to further enrich their understanding of the topics and the dynamics of a formal debate. Debates such as this facilitate meaningful discussions at a higher education level but also foster a sense of mentorship and learning for younger students. The high school students' immersion in this real-world debate setting will undoubtedly enhance their skills in critical thinking, public speaking, and the art of rhetoric. The experience gleaned from the inter-collegial event will undoubtedly serve as a solid foundation for our students, equipping them with the confidence and knowledge to articulate their viewpoints effectively. This opportunity will impact them far beyond the classroom, empowering them to become adept communicators and informed global citizens.
