Deep Learning Through IGNITE Seminar By Jessica Davis Director for Learning Published: 2020-10-07 06:32:26 In 2019 RVIS launched IGNITE Day with the goal of having students take control of their learning and lead the future of learning. Throughout the school year, students engage in five-week seminars designed to deepen their learning about topics of their choice. As the first five-week rotation comes to a close, the projects have been outstanding with students producing some amazing results that will contribute to their overall success and encourage them to be well-rounded individuals.Grade 6 students dedicated their first seminar to organization communication and time management. As a final project, students shared their skills to a wider audience through short videos. Mia in grade six created this short video that demonstrates her new knowledge but also teaches others how to use various Google platforms. Other seminars offered like “YouTube Genius” allowed students to teach others about something they are passionate about. Zain in grade 8 learned video editing while making a short video on how to make one of her favorite meals. Through IGNITE Day IB students receive additional support as they navigate through the IB program. Students recently wrapped up their first of several seminars designed to enhance their Extended Essay and portfolio development. These students now have the ability to access and use academic databases and are further on their way to completing key requirements for the IB Diploma program. As IGNITE Day continues to evolve, new aspects are integrated to strengthen the program. This year, RVIS introduced a set of Seminar Cohorts where students deepen their learning on broader themes such as Leadership, Communication, Design and Wellness. Students who successfully complete the cohort requirements earn certificates that can be added to their learning portfolio. Ms. Tara Waudby, the Head of School is currently running a yearlong seminar cohort on Leadership where students engage in a variety of leadership seminars which culminates with an internship either at RVIS or in the broader community. Other IGNITE Seminars range from Endangered species, designing learning spaces and creative journaling. All of these and more can be explored through the IGNITE Showcase page on the school’s website.
